DESCRIPTION: On the up workshop for homeless children. Cape Town Central police station. I earn a living as an actress. Two years ago I started On the up a project working with homeless children many of whom are AIDS orphans. There are about 30 kids who attend, all boys between 7 and 16. We provide a place where they can play and be children, even if it is only for a few hours a week. Our aim is to teach performance arts and circus skills so that they have a choice between begging as a means of survival or busking as a means of earning. My life has changed a lot since 1994, I was a lead character in the soap opera Isi Dingo but I left because I wanted to do something purposeful. Shortly afterwards I started On the Up. In ten years I will still be acting, On the UP will be huge and active in all of Africa. Street kids will be trained as performers and there will be no more victim mentality, the remedy is purpose.
